Oh okay, so it was more of a get-quotes-via-email kind of interview but I’m nevertheless very pleased with it. A few days back I wrote a blog post on lunchwalla.com, a social networking site that enables users to plan everyday social events centred on food (read: lunch/dinner/drinks) online with a few mouse-clicks. I wanted to find out more about the people behind this new venture and so shot off a few questions that Brian Nugent, President and Co-founder of Lunchwalla, very kindly responded to.
LSM: Tell us something about your Co-founders and yourself.
B. Nugent : Lunchwalla consists of Brian Nugent, Steve Watters and Sumit Birla. I studied Multi-National Business Operations in Florida State University. Steve is an MBA from Case Western Reserve University while Sumit has a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of South Florida.
LSM: So how did you all become partners?
B. Nugent: Steve and I co-owned Vitality Systems Inc, an animal health pharmaceutical company that we sold in June 2008 to a French Pharma company. After spending too much time around the house, our wives told us to go start something else. That’s when we met Sumit who had the Lunchwalla vision…
LSM : How did you obtain the seed capital for starting Lunchwalla?
B. Nugent: The Lunchwalla operation is entirely self-funded by Steve and myself.
LSM: What are your future plans with regards to expansion of operations and revenue generation?
B. Nugent: Lunchwalla plans to partner with complementary social media companies that will help users to really integrate all of their online social activity and planning. Lunchwalla generates revenue through various channels and partnerships, such as the local coupon feature. In addition, Lunchwalla will be expanding its revenue stream when it debuts new functionality later on.
LSM: Will the full set of features ( such as the discount coupons) be available only in a few select locations or are you planning to go global with them?
B. Nugent: Coupons are currently available only in the U.S.; however, we are in discussions with partners about adding this feature for outside of the U.S and plan on expanding this feature and others.
LSM: Tell us, in one line, what really sets Lunchwalla apart from competition?
B. Nugent: “The Vote,” or as we call it, the “Social Election,” is the most powerful tool one can use with Lunchwalla and one of the most important privileges we have in the U.S. (okay, two lines depending on which browser you are using).
